How to lose weight for a wedding

I didn’t plan to start an 80-day fitness journey. I just need my dress to fit; fast!

With a wedding coming up in June 2026, I need to drop two dress sizes in 80 days; just under 3 months😩

I’ve just gotten myself into a bit of trouble, but you know what they say: When life gives you lemons…

And honestly… are you even African if you don’t have at least one tailor story?

This one, however, was 100% on me.

I had an aso-ebi outfit made for my niece In-law’s upcoming Nigerian wedding in June 2026, and because I needed to send my measurements urgently to a tailor in Nigeria, I decided to try something different. There was no one around to help me measure properly, and instead of waiting or finding a tailor locally, I thought I’d be efficient and use ChatGPT to generate my measurements based on my UK size.

At the time, it felt like a smart solution. ChatGPT has made life so much easier in so many ways, so I genuinely believed it would work for something like this too.

I really had hope. I truly believed Chat wouldn’t let me down 😭

Well… the dress arrived.

And it does not fit. At all. 🥲

Where I Went Wrong

Looking back now, I can see exactly where things went wrong.

The main issue was in the way I phrased my prompt. I asked for my UK sizing for a “size 12/14 fitted full-length dress,” That word “fitted” really did me dirty 😭

I also didn’t mention that the fabric had no stretch, which makes a huge difference when it comes to how a garment fits.

If the fabric had any stretch at all, the dress probably would have worked. But because it doesn’t, there’s no room for adjustment, and the measurements needed to be precise.

So yes, lesson learned: when it comes to tailoring, nothing replaces accurate, real-life measurements.

What I’m Doing About It

Of course, I could remake the dress. That is still an option.

But instead of immediately going down that route, I’ve decided to use this situation as motivation to push myself a bit further with my fitness and health goals.

The truth is, I feel and look my best at a certain size. And while I accept that my body has changed over time—and that losing weight now is not as easy as it was in my 20s and early 30s—I also know that it is still possible with consistency and intention.

So rather than panic, I’ve decided to focus.

My 80-Day Goal

My goal is to drop two dress sizes in just under three months. Currently im a uk 12/14 and ideally would like to hit 10/12; but a smaller side of 12 would be fine.

I understand that healthy, sustainable weight loss typically averages around 1–2 pounds per week. Over 80 days, that can lead to a noticeable and realistic transformation if I stay consistent.

This is not about doing anything extreme. It is about being disciplined, intentional, and consistent with habits that I can actually maintain.

My Plan Going Forward

I’ve created a simple but structured plan that fits into my lifestyle.

Daily Movement

I will be walking for 30 to 60 minutes each day.

Walking is king for sustainable weight loss. Walking has worked for me in the past for weight loss postpartum. it’s something I can commit to consistently, and it is effective for fat loss without putting too much stress on my body.

Strength Training (2–3 Times Per Week)

I will be incorporating compound strength exercises such as squats, lunges, and other full-body movements.

This is important because building muscle helps to increase metabolism and improves overall body shape, not just weight.

Skipping (500 Skips Daily)

I will also be doing 500 skips each day.

This adds a higher-intensity element to my routine and helps to increase calorie burn in a short amount of time.

Nutrition Focus

In terms of food, I already don’t eat much junk or sugary foods, so my focus will be on improving the quality and balance of my meals.

I will be:

Increasing my protein intake to help with fullness and muscle support

Including more fibre to support digestion and reduce bloating

Paying closer attention to portion sizes, as this is often where things can slip

Who This Is For

I know I’m not the only one who has found themselves in a situation like this.

This is for anyone who has:

A wedding coming up

A school reunion

A big birthday or event

A holiday planned

Or even postpartum goals where you want to fit back into your clothes without replacing your entire wardrobe

Sometimes, you just need that extra push and a clear plan.

Final Thoughts

Yes, the dress doesn’t fit right now, but I’ve decided not to see that as a ‘problem’; instead, I’m choosing to see it as an opportunity.

Because in 80 days, a lot can change. And whether it’s this dress or another one, the goal is to feel confident, strong, and comfortable in my own body. So for now… we move 💪🏾✨
